The African American Cultural Garden, located in Cleveland, Ohio, was officially dedicated in 1977, in a ceremony that included the late founder, Honorable Dr. Booker T. Tall. Doctor Booker T. Tall, along with many others celebrated the dedication of the African American Cultural Garden by listening to the keynote address given by George V. Voinovich.
On that date the African American Cultural Garden took its place among the other Gardens of the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation, "Their Paths are Peace." Fittingly, this Garden is located on Martin Luther King Boulevard, between the East Boulevard and St. Clair exits, and on the west side of Martin Luther King Boulevard. The African American Cultural Garden is located within the chain of the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation, whose first Garden was dedicated in 1916.
Since 1977, however, the African American Cultural Garden has lain virtually dormant with few exceptions, (Jifunza Page, Pre-Juneteenth Celebration a notable one). Five (5) years ago, the late Cordell Edge, a long time Glenville resident was appointed to engage a committee to develop the African American Cultural Garden. Cordell began a journey to cultivate and renew interest in the African American Cultural Garden. Cordell's journey began with many hours of research to set the path for commitment, education, forgiveness, investment and celebration for the creation, development and installation of our African American Cultural Garden. Cordell hired a landscape architect to develop a design within the specifications of the Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation. Now, the journey continues under the leadership of Dr. Eugene J. Jordan as president.
